she went by ship to the US mainland, via new zealand, tonga and hawaii. then she traveled on greyhounds around the states.

she traveled mostly alone, sometimes with a companion she met along the way, and sometimes staying with relatives or acquaintances of her parents.

she was 23.

so not the woman i knew.

I think the word you're looking for is HIPPY! I'm hoping she oft flashed the peace sign, wore these, and used the word "groovy" in her diary at least once.

well, she does mention in the diary that "some people" on the ship were "smoking marijuana". and there is a photo of her in the yellow flares on the boat.

but beatnik? hippy? puh-lease.

you both met her, you both know the truth.
